Landscape Magic Lantern

Through the lens of Fumiaki Murakami’s telescope-shaped objects, viewers can see the beautiful ocean view of Hitachi city. When watching it for a while, however, the beholder realizes the bizarre events happening in the scene. Murakami is installing this work at Hitachi Station and the former Miwa Junior High School in Hitachiomiya city. The video played in the telescope is based on anecdotes called “Kabire no Takamine” and “Daidarabo” taken from the eighteenth-century text, Hitachi no Kuni Fudoki. Through the images of the world where reality and fantasy mingle, Murakami invites us to participate in this new mode of experiencing art and makes us believe that those regional anecdotes are perhaps true stories.
