Solitarium

Sumito Sakakibara is noted for landscape images of individuals’ inner world, depicting a crowd of people in a single screen. This 22-meter dome screen, in which his film is projected, is a metaphor of his skull. The film conveys his vision of a society through the images of a giant’s corpse, a queue of walking grey people, spirits of the dead, and a person lashing a brain that reads a book. This dark vision toward society is suggestive of our existence in the enormous world, where anything could happen. Sakakibara’s world in which everything is connected and affected with each other contradicts our common vision of life as linear. His work exemplifies the ecosystem in society that digests even the concept of life and death.
