Knit Invaders in Hitachi-Taga

Getting off of the Hitachi-Taga Station and walking along the shopping district streets, you may have encountered an unusual sight of various parts of the city, from street trees to hand railings, covered in knitting. This is Saki Chikaraishi’s project, one that expands knits machine-knitted indoors to outdoor public spaces. Knitting, a kind of personal activity done by hand, ventures out to the city and completely changes the landscape in this project, encouraging the formation of close communication between people and the city. The Knit Invader aspires to knit and envelop the world, so surely the proliferation will continue somewhere in the world. Hitachi-Taga shopping district is just one part of it.
