Artificial Rock No.109

The Izura coast is a site where Okakura Tenshinsettled during the beginning of his later years. Along the coast, Tenshin designed and built Rokkakudo, a place for meditation. It is known that the art scholar chose this place as the fantastically-shaped rocks jutting out as a result of carbonate concretion, reminded him of Chinese garden. For KENPOKU ART 2016, Zhan Wang presents stainless steel sculptures modeled after Chinese scholars’ rocks. This work that is futuristic yet embodies the traditions of the East, acclaims Tenshin’s spirit of constant exploration for new expressions.
