In the Garden – wind and forest I

The two exhibits, one here in the Tacchan-no-Yu spa, and the other in the Mori no Ideyu hot spring in Daigo, bear the same title. Masuda used the word “gardener” in her paintings in the mid-1980s, and used the word “garden” again in her work in 2014. Using plants as motifs, she has created paintings in which dynamic masses of color emit an organic yet mysterious presence. The shift from “Gardener” to “In the Garden” seems to suggest that her relationship with nature has changed from one of exercising control to relinquishing control. In this venue, in addition to Bending to a Crescent Moon – Daidai (2014) and Canary Grass – 03 (2014), there will be three new paintings done on Kenpoku-made Nishinouchi paper, on the theme of the Ryujin Valley’s “bowing winds.”
