A white world fills the elegant room with curvaceous girders across the ceiling and walls with a combed finish. Look closely, and you will find a cityscape, with a three-dimensional map with buildings cut out with a scalpel, and baby powder sprinkled over it like snow. This has been created by combining the maps of Ibaraki Prefecture’s 32 cities and 10 towns and 2 villages, thus producing a cityscape that melds reality and fiction. Ibaraki Prefecture is considerable in size, and is home to many cultural areas that are connected to neighboring prefectures. Through this artwork, Nipan may be hinting at newly established bonds within the prefecture. Maps are made by measuring the real world. Even though one can survey an area by abstracting and reducing the scale, people’s real lives and the passage of time cannot be expressed in a map. With his beautiful, poetic installation, Nipan makes us acutely aware of this.
