Fly Me to the Earth

Fly Me to the Earth 2016

Fly Me to the Earth

There is an airplane-like object hanging from the ceiling in a disused classroom. Its rear, upon closer inspection, is a lens. Peer inside, and there is an animation of an airplane flying over a sea of clouds. The plane can be maneuvered up, down, right and left, and the panoramic video will move along accordingly, allowing the viewer to explore the virtual world at will. The city of Hitachiomiya can be glimpsed through the clouds. This is art that uses so-called augmented reality (AR) technology, but rather than overlaying animation onto a video of the real world, this artwork adopts the unusual approach of the real scenery being shown behind the animation. Looking into the lens, the viewer will be able to imagine seeing their own physical location from above, as if they were having an out-of-body experience.
