moon satellite 2015-2016
This painting boasts an astounding size of 10 meters by 7.6 meters. Due to its sheer scale, it feels less like a painting and more like an environment, and makes us reconsider our preconceptions about paintings. Paintings are usually displayed on walls, but this one stretches out diagonally, and has a real sense of physicality. The yellow surface, titled moonwalk, even seems to glow like the moon reflecting sunlight. The complexity of its colors and the depth of the surface, drawn with countless dots, evoke the moon’s surface. In this artwork, the viewer first encounters the colors, then experiences the installation, then takes in the close-up view of the surface and its appearance of depth created by the paint. There are also complementary paintings displayed around the enormous painting. The moon is a satellite of the Earth, but in this room, viewers walk around the painting, becoming a satellite of the moon themselves. Uchiumi is also exhibiting star-shaped paintings in the restaurant in Michi-no-Eki Hitachiota.
