In the Garden – wind and forest II

The two exhibits, one in Daigo Hotspring Conservation Center Mori-no-Ideyu, and the other in Furusato Center, Tacchan-no-Yu (Communal Spa Facility) in Hitachiota citynear the Ryujin Great Suspension Bridge, bear the same title. Masuda used the word “gardener” in her paintings in the mid-1980s, and used the word “garden” again in her work in 2014. Using plants as motifs, she has created paintings in which dynamic masses of color emit an organic yet mysterious presence. The shift from “Gardener” to “In the Garden” seems to suggest that her relationship with nature has changed from one of exercising control to relinquishing control. In the venue, a pair of four-piece folding screens (7.2m x 1.8m), made of Kenpoku-made Nishinouchi paper, expresses the nature and atmosphere of Daigo town. This new work also incorporates the three-dimensionality that traditional folding screens offer.
