Where the Sound of the Forest Goes

Tutatchikova’s work delves into the depths and the memory of the land. Focusing on the forestry industry in Daigo town, she went to the actual forestry sites and carried out interviews and photo shoots, with the cooperation of the people involved in the industry. Her artwork is showcased in two separate rooms. In one, visitors can listen to the “sound of the mountain” that resonated with her the most at the sites. The other room houses photographs, musical scores, and materials such as maps and texts. Tutatchikova describes the sound of a tree being cut down as “one tree, one song” – “a song for a chainsaw, whistle and tree, joined by the whole forest”. The musical scores, created by Tutatchikova herself, imaginatively represent the sound of the forestry sites. This sound-driven artwork conveys the close links between nature, humanity and industry, that the artist perceived through the encounters with local people working in forestry.
