10:00
Tenshin Memorial Museum of Art, Ibaraki

Okakura Tenshin and his apprentice Yokoyama Taikan contributed greatly towards the modernisation of Japanese paintings. This is the area they and others once based their creative activities. There is a museum in which you get to trace the footmarks of these artists representing the Izura coast. Much anticipated is how a group of “ultra-technologists”, a.k.a. TeamLab, will attempt to recreate the Eastern aestheticism that Tenshin pursued using digital technology.

Rokkaku-do (Izura Institute of Art & Culture, Ibaraki University)

Sticking out from the top of a rock, an octagonal hall designed and built by Okakura Tension himself, stands overlooking the Pacific ocean. Tenshin was known to have immersed himself in reading and contemplation in this hall. The sculptures by Jian Wang and Yoshihiro Suda seem to resonate Tenshin’s vision and the scenery of the Izura coast, while being wrapped in the sound of the waves.

Looking back on the trip

Sea, industrial heritage, sacred land….
By visiting parts of the “seaside” area you will be able to summarise various characteristics which embody the northern Ibaraki region. The artworks will help to shed light on these characteristics from each unique perspective. Why don’t you go for a drive in search of that special scenery you can only witness during KENPOKU ART 2016.
